Melbourne Cup
Melbourne Cup Day, November 4th
It’s ‘Cup time’ again … the Melbourne Cup, the race that stops the nation … and it truly does, every first Tuesday in November. Businesses close, workers take the day off, in Victoria and the ACT it is a public holiday … all over Australia kitchens buzz with activity as luncheons are prepared … hats are taken from their dusty boxes, outfits given an airing and the champagne is put on ice.
Not to mention the horses. This is a long race, 3,200 metres, generally regarded as the most prestigious ‘two-mile’ handicap in the world. It takes special horses to run the distance and their preparation is long and arduous. One of the most famous winners is Phar Lap, a giant chestnut thoroughbred gelding, who became a much loved national icon in Australia during the 1930’s Depression and the most famous horse in the world of his day. He is still the most visited exhibit in the Melbourne Museum.
In 2005 Melbourne Cup was held before a crowd of 106,479. The mare, Makybe Diva, made history by becoming the only horse to win the race three times. Trainer Lee Freedman said after the race, "Go and find the youngest child on the course, because that's the only person here who will have a chance of seeing this happen again in their lifetime."
At Flemington in November, the Victoria Racing Club prepares the racecourse to perfection. At exactly the right moment thousands of roses are in peak bloom, acres of car park become manicured lawns where patrons picnic at white clothed tables and champagne corks fly.
A ‘Cup Luncheon’ is traditionally held in Ravensthorpe or Hopetoun each year. This year the Hospital Auxiliary will host it at the Entertainment Centre in Ravensthorpe. Starting at 10am, there will be prizes for best dressed, best hat, door prize, raffles, sweeps and a sumptuous lunch.
So drag out your hats, give that outfit worn once at a wedding an airing, book a table, go with your friends and contribute to a vital fund raising event which will support our local hospital with life saving equipment.
THIS YEAR THERE ARE A FEW OPTIONS OF VENUES IN WHICH TO ENJOY THE MELBOURNE CUP - HAVE A LOOK AT THE EVENTS CALENDAR IN THE FORUM SECTION OF THE www.livinginhopetoun.com website!
