Community Meeting
Galaxy Resources Update
By Sue Leighton
When the Ravensthorpe Regional Chamber of Commerce arranged a community meeting to give an update of their proposed Mt Cattlin Mine it was expecting Terry Stark (Operations Manager) as the feature guest speaker.
What a surprise when Iggy Tan the CEO of Galaxy and his entourage of John Sobolewski (Chief Financial Officer & Company Secretary) Anand Sheth General Manager and Business Development Officer) and Terry Stark (Operations Manager) all attended and were ready with the first Community Newsletter for Galaxy resources.
The Ravensthorpe entertainment Centre was packed with residents, Business owners and community leaders to hear the latest on the proposed development of the Lithium – Tantalum mine and processing plant to be built on private land a few kilometres form the Ravensthorpe townsite.
Iggy Tan Managing Director lead the charge with an informative power presentation on the future use of the product and the common uses of Lithium in every day products such as cosmetics, medicines, glass production, and welding electrodes. However there is a growing demand for the product for the production of Lithium -ion batteries. With the expanding and developing electric and hybrid car market and the push toward a greener world it is expected the product value to stay buoyant for some time.
Although the project is still in the planning and funding stages the company is forging forward with the final development plans and if all goes to plan construction should begin in the 3rd quarter of 2009 with processing expected to begin in 3rd quarter 2010.
After many environmental studies carried out by the company we believe there will be little if no effect on the site or within the town site and as result of these studies Galaxy have been advised that by the EPA that Mt Cattlin requires no formal environmental assessment. (Extract from Galaxy Resources newsletter issue no.1)
Our key philosophy is to live and work in town, we employ you at the gate. We aim for a sustainable and long term project .The benefits of this will then flow on into the community.
Mr Tan recognised the Ravensthorpe community is experiencing some hard times with the recent economic downturn and impact on the resource sector. However it is because of the downturn that the Mt Cattlin Project can now move forward.
"With the availability of a local workforce there will be no fly in fly out We prefer to employ locals where possible.
We will employ you at the gate.
We make no promises!
We wont be buying houses for you to rent. You find your own way to the gate and we employ you from there". Says Iggy.
The company and Iggy’s philosophy is to live and work in the region, a philosophy which has worked for them in previous projects in and around regional W.A and in particular the Midwest region of W.A.
It is estimated the mine will employ 75-100 people.
"For those of you who have already made enquiries please stay in touch with us" says Terry Stark.
An employment strategy will be in place by the end June and if you want more information there is a website and you can stay in touch with us this way or by phone.
We predict to process about 137,000 tonnes of product per annum.
Plans are to transport the product via road trains through to Esperance Port (yet to be approved) and then shipped to China. It is expected that there would be 6 road trains a day. Alternative would be to transport to Bunbury where Lithium has been handled there for many years.
The Goldfields Esperance Development Corporation has carried out a study on the financial impact the mine will have if it goes ahead. It is believed to produce approximately $25Million dollars per annum in offsets the region.
Terry Stark stated the company is still in talks with the government regarding power supply however; they are going ahead with a proposal to build a diesel power supply plant or a more environmentally friendly bio-mass power plant using stubble.
The Galaxy team became real stars when they mixed among the locals to personally answer any questions.
